Above you see a rare view on the CD-i disc "Essentials - the new shape of home shopping by freemans (1994) (barclays - philips)". Published in 1994. It is a professional CD-i disc that is quite important in the rising of the internet and its web shopping nature. Freemans presented its catalogues on these discs so consumers could shop via a disc; there was even a cart to collect your favourite items. Freemans itself was (still is actually) a mail-order firm in UK that specializes itself in fashion, electricals and gifts.

Essentials - The New Shape of Home Shopping by Freemans (UK) was developed by Barclays in 1994, exclusive in the UK. It was actually sbsidized by the European Union to promote digital communication. This disc was the result of a Home Shopping Research Project by Homestead, which is a consortium of companies interested in this retail area and sponsored by the European Union to look into the possibilities.

You might remember this from the CDinteractive Forum from many years ago. It was recently posted again by CD-i member DataPro on the world of cdi forum.

From the disc:
The New Shape of Home Shopping

Watch a carefully chosen range of essentials come to life on screen, modelled in natural surroundings. Choose from 4 fashion sections for men and women:

  1. Classic
  2. Casual
  3. Leisure
  4. Accessories

Make use of the 3 viewing routes available to you, browse through the Video sections at your leisure and use the Stylist’s Advice to complete a look, or go straight to the fashion Index if you know exactly what you want. Use our unique designed Interactive Colour Switch when browsing, to see a garment of your choice appear in the colour scheme you desire.

We had this before on Interactive Dreams in 2009, recently brought back to our attention by CD-i member DataPro: "It looks like a digital fashion catalogue from an english mail-order firm. It's from 1994 as seen on their website. In their history section you can find: 1994 - Freemans produces an interactive CD for its customers, which wins several awards."
