America's favorite musical gameshow in the ninetees was probably Name that Tune. Name that Tune is an American television game show that put two contestants against each other to test their knowledge of songs. The first show was aired in USA on NBC Radio in 1952! It is still active these days, so it is a very long running game show. A game based on the show was released for the short-lived Philips CD-i home console. This version was hosted by Bob Goen and varies greatly from any version of the televised shows; it was instead based off an unsold revival pilot that was hosted by Peter Allen in 1990; that pilot was co-produced by Marty Pasetta and Orion Television and was not picked up. So this means there are some differences from the CD-i game compared to the well known Name that Tune show in USA.
It is also remarkable that the CD-i version of Name that Tune was, next to a newer mobile version, actually the only home console adaptation of Name that Tune. While other USA gameshows got several game versions on various consoles (for example Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune), Name that Tune on CD-i was the only interactive version for a long time. Probably this had to do with licensing and this might also be the reason why the CD-i version is based on an unsold revival pilot that was hosted by Peter Allen in 1990 instead of the popular show that was originally created and produced by Harry Salter and his wife Roberta.
From the disc: "Name that Tune offers pop classics from the '50's to the '90's. Get ready for loads of fun with the CD-i version of television's tune-filled favorite. Host Bob Goen will test your knowledge with 160 categories and 600 great songs from the '50's to the '90's. Four different and exciting rounds quiz your musical knowledge of some of the greatest pop hits. All you have to do is watch, listen and Name that Tune!"
The game was developed in 1993 by Philips' internal studio "Philips Fantasy Factory". After this project, Philips Fantasy Factory developed Hotel Mario on CD-i. These were actually the only two CD-i titles known by Philips Fantasy Factory.
The CD-i version was hosted by Bob Goen. Bob was never a host of the official Name that Tune show, so the resemblance with the original show is less compared to other game shows like Joker's Wild and Jeopardy, as in these CD-i titles the original hosts from television are also starring in the CD-i version. Because of licensing issues, Philips had to introduce a new host for the CD-i version of Name that Tune, this was Bob Goen (who perfoms very good, by the way)
The instruction booklet gives away more details about the rules in the game:
