Next to collecting CD-i retail games, it's a challenge to collect one of the CD-i demo cd's and the testing discs that are floating around a lot. Especially the testing discs are interesting to us, as they often contain early versions of a game and have some differences compared to the end retail product. The first time I discovered this was in Zelda's Adventure, we found several differences in the world of the retail version compared to our early version. The nice thing about this is the development story behind it, when testers play the early version they make a report of what they think is too difficult, not playable or just too obvious. Now it always surprised me that these testing discs always seem to have a version number above 1, like 1.05. It suggests that it is even an improvement over the golden 1 version, but apparently I was wrong!
The Philips policy was to label the first testing phase disc to be formally tested as 1.01, so it is not the full version per se. These testing discs by Philips all have version numbers and sometimes they are written on the cover, always 1.01 or higher. Does this mean it is already the final version (as it is above 1)? No, that's not the case. CD-i Fan informs us that the first testing discs of any title, with the first version to be tested, was starting as version 1.01. Each follow-up was incremented with 0.01, so the next one would be 1.02 and so on. From these numbers you can't tell which version number actually made it to the golden retail product!
