Atlantis and Ram:Raid levels were designed on a DOOM level editor and stored as PWAD files on the CD-i disc, Paul Clarke shared with us recently. Would that mean we can extract the files from the cd-i disc and upload it again in the same doom level editor? That sounds cool! Paul explains:"Hmm. I can't remember if I encoded them somehow but basically for speed we used a DOOM editor and mapped textures in DOOM to the CD-i game. We then placed DOOM objects on the floor to represent turn points for the baddies, etc. So the walls should be in the right place but the floor would be littered with weird stuff that doesn't make sense in DOOM"
It's still interesting to learn how Doom was in fact both an example as a tool for the guys at Philips Research to experiment with the technique on CD-i. Without Doom, Atlantis: The Last resort would not have existed. Would Doom itself be possible on CD-i? Paul: "Nope, sorry. ID Software did see a demo of Wolfenstein 3D that I did at the time on CD-i but it just wasn't good enough due to CD-i limitations. DOOM would be harder still."
