Interesting timeline that shows the history of disc formats including CD Video, laser disc, CD+Graphics and it ends in 1990-1991 with the new upcoming CD-i standard. The history before CD-i is a long one, with several companies exploring the possibilities to do more with optical discs. CD+G (also known as CD-G, CD+Graphics and TV-Graphics) is an extension of the compact disc standard that can present low-resolution graphics alongside the audio data on the disc when played on a compatible device. CD+G discs are often used for karaoke machines, which use this functionality to present on-screen lyrics for the song contained on the disc. The CD+G specifications were published by Philips and Sony in an updated revision of the Red Book specifications. The first CD to be released with CD+G graphics was Eat or Be Eaten by Firesign Theatre in 1985 (Which we talked about yesterday). CD+Graphics is a peculiar format, linking the graphics ability of CD-i with the audio CD. It was mostly used for karaoke, showing the lyrics as low-spec graphics on the screen, like this karaoke disc:

The graphics on screen look like this:
