Instagram user Alice Automata gave the CD-i some nice attention when posting about this unit which she just picked up. Alice: "A few days ago I picked up this cripsy mint Philips CDi. For those of you that don't know the Philips CD-i, it is a console released in early 90s. Philips, Sony and Matsushita (Panasonic) started working on a system together to competition the cd-rom systems.
Both Sony and Panasonic resigned after a few months, but Philips did continue and thus the CDi was born. CDi stands for Compact Disc interactive and was pretty much a multimediasystem for it's time. Music, Movies and Videogames were all playable on this system.
A few games release in the early days were Dragon's Lair, Alien Gate, Burn: Cycle, Escape from Cybercity, Chaos Control and so on. Fun fact about the Philips CDi is that it actually has some Mario and Zelda titles. (Link: The Faces of Evil, Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Hotel Mario).
There were some other games still in developement but never seen light (Super Mario's Wacky World and Donkey Kong). In the end the Philips CDi while having some Nintendo exclusives and some other new in innovative features the system didn't do very well.
Mainly because of the high pricing which was around 450 euro's at the time and the more expensive version was around 590 euro. So all and all I picked this system up for 10 euro. Also got a few games so going to give it a test spin soon. So if you have any recommondation feel free to post them! Have a good day!"
Alice, my tips would be: Creature Shock, Solar Crusade, Christmas Country, Lucky Luke, Golden Oldies, Micro Machines, Litil Divil, The Last Bounty Hunter, Atlantis: The Last Resort and I would recommend to burn the Voyeur 2 ISO's on a disc, this game is also very nice!
