One of the worries we have with optical media is that in the end, the material degrades and the disc will be unreadable in the end: disc rot. CD-i member Just Noah asks: "What does disc rot look like? Does it make the ink on the top side of the disc visible from the bottom side?" - And the more burning question: Has anyone see this on CD-i discs? The short answer for me is: Never.
But is depends on how you threat them and save them. Keep them in a
dark environment at ambient temperatures and there is hardly any
degradation over years. The discs are very sensitive to light, so keep
your discs away from light. Keep them also save from crashes/damages as it can initiate corrosion when reflective aluminum layer is exposed directly to air. Maxime Croizer adds: "It manifests as either pinholes or more "organic" looking traces like that:"
