Around the same time The 7th Guest came to market on CD-i, SPC Vision debut game title Alien Gate was also released in 1993. While graphically impressive, the first version was not working on all CD-i players and on certain players it did not get past level 5. In the case of CD-i, this was caused as Philips released new player versions which were not 100% exactly the same. After releasing the CD-i 4xx players, the board, chips and software were updated and apparently certain CD-i software would not accept these changes. Philips issued an update but as it was not possible to update software like we do now, over the internet, Philips had to publish a whole new disc, which they did.
The first version of Alien Gate apparently contained some bugs which didn't allow you to get passed level 5. The game would crash. I think this could have been the same kind of issue that happened in The 7th Guest and the crash at the cake puzzle on certain players. The bug in Alien Gate never got a lot of attention here and we don't see any members who have trouble playing Alien Gate after level 5. But it is a fact that the first version did not play on all CD-i players and Philips sent out updated versions to customers.
