For the first time a test disc of Rise of the Robots popped up, which is an interesting find because of its digital video history. It appears to be very interesting to dig through the contents of the
CD-i version of Rise of the Robots, as developer Instinct Design
revealed that certain parts of the 'DV part' is still on the disc, but
it is never accessed as in the last weeks of production the digital
video parts were cancelled due to a combination of deadlines and
technical crashes. Philips demanded the release of Rise of the Robots in
1994, whether the full planned experience was ready or not. Developer
Pete Dabbs previously claimed that he designed the game as a 'Digital
Video on CD-i' game, using the memory for smoother gameplay, 30fps movie
sequences and enhanced effects like screen tilting. Instinct Design was
the internal developing studio at Mirage Technologies who developed the
CD-i version.
This disc above may hold the 'Digital Video Optional' parts for testing,
which makes this title very interesting for collectors to hunt down. The final product still claims on the back that a Digital Video
Cartridge is required, but this base-case CD-i title doesn't show
anything anymore of the promises it made during the development process.
We're very interested to find the making of video that appears to be
present, according to Peter Jones, who formally worked at Mirage
Technologies.
