Recently The CD-i Completionist (an excellent place to read CD-i game reviews) wrote about Arcade Classics. It's worth mentioning that Ms. Pac-Man might be one of the better versions that is available on whatever format it came out on. Arcade Classics was published on CD-i in 1996 and fully developed/coded/ported by Philips ADS. There were conversions on it of three Namco classics including Galaxian, Ms Pac-man and Galaga. NAMCO took special interest in this project even though they weren't directly involved with the development of the CD-i version, the quality of the Intellectual Property had to be maintained. Philips ADS were given a Pac-man arcade board with the chipset for Ms Pac-man to wire up so they had everything to do a decent conversion.
It wasn't a straight port however, the entire game was upgraded to a 256 colour palette and also extra levels were added courtesy of Johnny Wood and fully authorised by NAMCO. The graphics are overhauled (much like the SNES/Genesis ports), the screen scrolls, and a two-player cooperative mode is included. What makes the port unique is its selection of mazes. There are four options of mazes to choose from - Arcade Levels, Battle Zones, Team Spirit and Death Traps; the latter three are exclusive to this version. Dante from The CD-i Completionist summarizes "For Ms. Pac-Man, they actually modernized the graphics and colors, instead of going for arcade accuracy, and made each level scrolling, instead of changing the aspect ratio to fit standard 4:3 TV screens.
They also added a two-player co-op mode, difficulty levels, and, most impressively, a ton of new maze layouts that are unique to this version. On the main menu, you can choose from Arcade Levels, Battle Zones, Team Spirit, Death Traps, and Speed Mazes. It’s sort of amazing that they went the extra step to create them at all."Paul Clarke, a former CD-i developer who worked at Philips ADS, summarizes:"My friends and colleagues at Philips Media – Advanced Development and Support did this work in Redhill, UK. They were a great team and did a great job I think. Around this time they moved on to do level design and graphics for RamRaid and Atlantis."
