'Philips Functional Music' was a service by Philips in the '70's on 6" tapes and it is the start of why Philips CD-i is compatible with Background Music CD's (BGM)

This is a small sidestep of our CD-i journey but hear me out: We discussed before the BGM CD format and thanks to CD-i member Jac Goudsmit quite some details surfaced about his time at Codim. This piece above was shared by Jerry Priessen in the'Philips Made' group. It shows the history of Philips in background music (functional music) on earlier formats like these (6", 4-track mono, 3.75 ips) tapes, with mono tracks that could hold hours of music. Jac: "This was the precursor of 'Philips Background Music Services. Later they produced players and cartridges that could be connected to the intercom of a store. And after that Philips switched to CD's which were compatible on CD-i (also their own format). I worked at Codim between 1994/1995. That was a small company that produced CD-i discs. We also had a contract with Philips Background Music Services to master BGM CD's every month, by using software that was written by a colleague. It took 4 a whole day to master a 4-hour stereo DAT tape into a CD-i with 8 hours of ADPCM music." We have a few BGM CD's in the Home Computer Museum in Helmond, if you want to test or see them!

I find it interesting to learn more about how Philips ever came to develop the CD-i system and why it can play the formats it is compatible with. Most of these formats have a long running history and were, in a different form, already inhouse being developed at Philips on previous formats like tapes (Learning Director), vinyl (Polygram), or cassettes (P2000) - Philips was focusing on edutainment with P2000 since the early eighties, they released other consoles like the Videopac (Magnavox Odyssey) - and even BGM CD's have a long running history with Philips.

[Thanks, Jac Goudsmit]
