Philips released a compact CD-i 470 and CD-i 490 model, along with other 'compact' and more budget-focused models of CD-i players including the CD-i 450 toploader. The 470 and 490 are front-loaders. There are some differences between these two players. First the outside is different: The CD-i 470 is more black colored (at least darker grey), the CD-i 490 has a lighter grey color. As you can see above, the text is positioned differently on both players: The CD-i 470 positioned them diagonally and the CD-i 490 positioned the text horizontally. On the inside, there is a reason why Philips released two different versions: The CD-i 490 has an integrated Digital Video Cartridge, the CD-i 470 has a slot on the back so you could upgrade the player by plugging in a separate DVC.
CD-i member retrostuff comments: "Integrated is the term to describe all Mini DVC with IMPEG chipset (9956/40). They came in two flavours: With metal case for use in 470 (and others) or without case. The latter were preinstalled in a plastic frame in certain players (e.g. 490 and 660)."
It was surprising to see when CD-i member Glen Parsons posted a CD-i 470 player that did not have the slot on the back. The back of this 470 player looks like the back of a CD-i 490 player.
Retrostuff: "Actually, the 470/00 and /05 (UK) are supposed to have a DVC door for upgrade. The /20 however, is supposed to come with a DVC preinstalled. I have a 470/20 with a DVC door, so it seems that some players were built the other way around."
Those coax connections I do not recognize either on a 470. Normally you had to buy a seperate RF Modulator to connect it via a coax cable on a 470, right? Retrostuff explains: "RF is normal for UK players, the same goes for 210 and 220, for example. (/05, /25, /45...)"
[Thanks, Glen Parsons, Retrostuff, Bas]
