Although it doesn't tell you on the box or in the game, The Apprentice actually is designed as a 'Digital Video Cartridge Optional' title. This means that the game is in fact a base-case CD-i title, so it will play without a Digital Video Cartridge. But when you have a Digital Video Cartridge inserted, The Apprentice will benefit from it anyway.
In the case of The Apprentice, when you play with a Digital Video Cartridge, it adds sound effects; you can play both SFX and background music at the same time. Moreover, the scrolling is improved and will be smoother thanks to the extra (and faster) internal memory that is on the Digital Video Cartidge.
