Reader question: "Do you know if there is a CD-i homebrew scene at all?"

I wish there was! Unfortunately, there is no current active homebrew scene. Probably because the CD-i format is not well documented and the standard is difficult to understand. There were 2 efforts in the past 15 years. In 2005, Charles Doty dug into it and converted Frog Feast to CD-i, a remarkable effort. He also released the source code of it (at least, a simplified limited version of it) - In 2018, it was the first time that another member, Gameblabla, could use this source code and convert one of his own games, Killminds, to CD-i, and named in Super Quartet. After that, I've heard a few rumours that a few people would WANT to develop for it, but other than I've never seen any activity, progress or physical proof that they are working on it, rather than some promises. For example, there is an open source section at The World of CD-i, but it's been empty for over a year. No single progress, so that's not really a 'scene'.... Of course we're looking for ways to get CD-i to the attention of more people and we hope that some find it interesting (challenging!) to code a CD-i title!

Any progress that will happen we will of course report here on Interactive Dreams. With the upcoming release of a new CD-i Emulator 0.6 there is renewed potential to show what is possible on CD-i in 2020 and beyond!

[Thanks, Alastair]
