Actually more CD-i titles used the Digital Video Cartridge when it was available, but these CD-i's could also do without (just less pretty)

Last week we posted some background information on CD-i titles that were labeled 'Digital Video Optional' - While Philips never officially used this term, there were some titles actually using the memory or MPEG playback feature to enhance the software, but did not require it to actually run on a CD-i player. Some CD-i titles didn't mention it at all (The Apprentice), some did erroneously state a DVC was required to play (Rise of the Robots), or just put 'Digital Video on CD-i' on the front cover (Master Labyrinth). It was not really clear when a CD-i title required a DVC or not.
Well, CD-i member Orlando Arroyo shared with us some more CD-i titles that were labeled 'Digital Video Optional'. Let's have a look:

First, there's Cartoon Carnival. This was a FunHouse CD-i title that plays as a base-case CD-i title, but when a DVC is installed, the videos (that are given when you win one of the minigames) are showed full-screen! It seems on some copies they added an extra sticker (as you can see on the cover picture) to clearify that this title is "Digital Video Enhanced". The same trick works in Strip Poker Live. It is nicely stated on the boxart this time:

The scenes with the ladies are in fullscreen mode when a DVC is installed. But this is not neccessary to play the game. If there's no DVC present, the same videos are presented on a much smaller screen.
From the manual:

Another example is the "Cranberries Doors and Windows" Rainbow CD. As it sais, this was not a dedicated CD-i, but a new kind of hybrid CD, being playable on CD-i but also on CD-ROM and as an audio CD. One extra feature was that this title was playable on a base-case CD-i player, as well it could benefit from the video playback of the DVC: The Zombie video was full-screen with a DVC, small-screen on a base-case CD-i player.

[Thanks, Orlando Arroyo, Nicolas Scibilia]
