CD-i member Omegalfa posted a long and nice review of the CD-i game The Apprentice on his website.  Including screenshots of all levels and bosses, all the cheat codes and other details of this CD-i platformer. He points out the good points: If you are a CD-i collector or just want to try some games on CD-i, The Apprentice should definitely be on your list. The fact it wisely uses the Digital Video Cartridge (you can play without, but when it is inserted it benefits from the extra memory by playing background music and FX sounds simultaneously. The fact that the soundtrack is on it as a true audio CD, combined in the CD-i Ready format.

This means that it is a hybrid CD: You can insert the disc in your Audio CD player and it will act like a normal Audio CD. You can insert it in your CD-i player and the game will start. The soundtrack is of high quality and the graphics are really good, especially for CD-i. And as you know, there is A LOT to discover. Another big plus is the fact it is fully playable in both CD-i Emulator and MAME. You can also play this game on PC, thanks to CD-i member Shikotei. Omegalfa doesn't dare to mention any bad points, but the game is, in my opinion, not perfect.

Personally I would love a two-player option. The biggest weak point is the fact it is only a vertical platformer, the screen only goes up and down. That's mainly due to the technical limitations of the CD-i hardware, and it took a few years before developer The Vision Factory got around that. In my opinion, when I look at graphics and sound, the spiritual successor 'Lucky Luke CD-i' is an improvement over this one. Otherwise it is a true CD-i gem.

[Thanks, Omegalfa]
