In the past years we have found a lot of CD-i prototypes. There are in fact so many lost CD-i projects that we have lost track sometimes of some of them. With our recent masterlists of all kinds of CD-i genres, we thought it was a nice idea to create our own masterlist of all unreleased CD-i titles that we came across in the past. Some of them you won't even find anywhere else, which makes our archive pretty unique. The unreleased CD-i titles can be categorized as following:
1. Cancelled because the CD-i platform ceased to exist (purely marketing)
Many of these titles were eventually released on a different platform, as the reason for cancellation on CD-i was purely a marketing decision (Down in the Dumps, Star Trek, Voyeur 2): Philips stepped out of the CD-i business in 1996 so support ended for the platform.
We find it interesting to see there are also unreleased CD-i projects that were cancelled even before CD-i was launched (Deja Vu, Urban Murderfiles, Uninvited and developers like Electronic Arts), just because the release of CD-i took so many years that CD-i developers did not want to wait anymore.
3. Cancelled because of technical difficulties CD-i specs were eventually too low)
There are certain CD-i projects that were eventually cancelled due to technical difficulties, which is why some development periods took too long and it cost CD-i developers too much money to continue, including Star Wars: Rebel Assault, Microcosm and Dead End.
Some games were planned, discussed, a concept was designed including art, but it never got as far as playable gameplay. Some CD-i games only exists on paper, including Donkey Kong, The Apprentice 2, Witchwood.
