The popularity of CD-i nowadays is partly because we have officially licensed Nintendo games on the CD-i System. While officially four titles have originally been released (Link: Faces of Evil, Zelda: Wand of Gamelon, Hotel Mario and Zelda's Adventure), even more Nintendo games were announced but never released, including Super Mario's Wacky Worlds, Mario Takes America and Donkey Kong. However, the focus of popularity of the first games in 1993 is most often about the style of the cutscenes, and these are very often in the center of the discussion. While the animation and voice-overs are not in line with what Nintendo enthusiasts expect from Nintendo games from the past, it is what makes 'Nintendo on CD-i' quite popular.

Both Link: Faces of Evil and Zelda: Wand of Gamelon are translated and dubbed in various languages, including dutch, german and french. All these versions have their own voice actors. For example, in France, Link is voiced by the same guy who does the voice of Tintin, and Stan and Randy Marsh as well as many other characters from South Park and various dubbed shows in France. His voice-over of Link is really fun and matches the original pretty well!

One of our CD-i members, SlayerTank99, managed to get in contact with the guy who did the voice-over of the USA/english version of Link. The tone of the talk was originally biased with words like 'cheesy' and 'bad' - We at Interactive Dreams want to share with you the objective parts, not the opinions about the quality of the games. "Today I present with you an interview with Jeffrey Rath who voiced Link in the Zelda CD-I games released back in 1993. Developed by Animation Magic."

Me: Can you tell us a little about yourself, Jeffrey?
Jeffrey: I was an artistic director at a theater company in Newburyport, Massachusetts for 18 years. I am a teacher, father, carpenter, and I still do some theater today.
Me: Did you know anything about the Legend of Zelda franchise before you got the role of Link?
Jeffrey: I did not know anything about Zelda before I got the role, other that it was a video game. I had never played it.

Me: How did you get the voice of Link?
Jeffrey: I heard about the audition from some friends and was interested in getting into voice over work. I auditioned and got the part.
Me: What was it like doing the voice of a very famous Nintendo character?
Jeffrey: I didn’t really know how famous the character was. It was a good gig for someone in their early 20s.

Me: What was the voice recording sessions like?
Jeffrey: It was new technology, so it was cool to be a part of. The sessions were really fun.

Me: Can you still do the voice to this day?
Jeffrey: I can’t really do the voice anymore. It was a long time ago.

Me: What was your favorite line that Link says in both games?
Jeffrey: To be honest, I don’t remember any of the lines. I liked doing the noises of getting hit or hurt.

Me: [What is your opinion on the quality of the voice-acting?]
Jeffrey: The voice acting was unprofessional. We were not professionals and the tech was super experimental. It was still fun to do and I didn’t expect it to even make it to the public. I never got to actually see the finish product or even play the game.

Me: Have fans ever contacted you?
Jeffrey: I have been contacted by fans a couple times and my students get a kick out of it. I saw a clip from the games about 6 years ago.

Me: What do you think is next for you?
Jeffrey: I have no idea what the future holds for me. I would love the opportunity to do another voice over work, though.

I’d like to thank Jeffrey Rath for taking the time to be in this interview.

[Thanks, SlayerTank99, bombokbombok]
