Thanks to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer we had James Bond on CD-i but also Robocop! If you grew up with CD-i you will remember one of the more rare Video CD's published by Philips on CD-i and VCD. Orion holds the copyrights of the Robocop movies and it is owned by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Philips signed a deal to get James Bond on Video CD and via Orion it was also possible to publish the Robocop trilogy on Video CD as well. In the ninetees, Philips did its very best to get all big names on their VCD format to get it as popular as possible. The original RoboCop movie is dated 1987, but released on VCD format in 1994 by Philips Media. The follow-up, RoboCop 2, was released in 1990 in cinema and on VCD in 1995. Also the third movie was published on VCD in 1995, while it was in cinema in 1993.
Jorg mentioned some nice trivia bits about the contracts that Philips signed about movie licenses on CD-i. It appears that Philips described the contracts as general as possible to benefit the most of them. For example, the license was about optical media instead of a compact disc, so the licenses would apply on both LaserDisc format as the CD-i format.
