At Interactive Dreams we discussed several regional releases on CD-i before; CD-i titles which were only released in one country. And you probably know I especially like the encyclopedias released on CD-i. Before, I only knew of the dutch, german, french and US version, but there is also exclsive spanish CD-i software including a full CD-i encyclopedia in the spanish language. The pictures you see show us the logo of 'Salvat Multimedia' and the titles were apparently not published by Philips. That's the first remarkable to see here. If any of you have this CD-i disc please tell us more! It's typical now with the Internet all common around, there are no encyclopedias anymore on CD like we used to have. CD-i was a perfect example who tried to bring you more than games, and however it didn't succeed in every genre, it was definitely unique in bringing information to your TV.
The CD-i encyclopedias that we know of:
The Netherlands: Philips Media Interactieve Encyclopedie (1995)
Belgium: Standaard Interactieve Encyclopedia (the same as the dutch version with a different name, as they used the content of the Belgium publisher Standaard and this name was part of the deal)
Germany: Bertelsmann Universal Lexikon (1994/1995)
France: Dictionnaire Hachette Multimedia (1993/1995)
USA: Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia (1991/1995)
Spain: Salvat Enciclopedia Interactiva (1995/1998)
Most of these encyclopedias were originally base-case CD-i titles, but they received a 'Digital Video' version as a stand-alone update around 1995. The Spanish 'Salvat Enciclopedia Interactiva' is the only one not being published by Philips and the only one that received an update in 1998.
The picture above reveals another interesting detail: This the 'new 1998' version and indeed the discs are copyrighted in 1998. That is a remarkable year as CD-i was already over for Philips and only a handful of titles hit the market, mainly in the hometown of CD-i: The Netherlands. But as the Spanish Salvat Encyclopedia was not published by Philips, they tried it at least until 1998 as well. It might be the newest CD-i encyclopedia of all, comparing all the regional releases.
