Gearheads is a strategy video game developed by R/GA Interactive and Philips Media, and published by Philips Media for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS in June 1996. The player deploys wind-up toys to get them across an arena while attempting to prevent toys from crossing from the other side. Players can play against the computer or another player. Single, customisable games can be played, or the player can play a series of games with set rules and a limited number of lives in a tournament. This sounds like a possible CD-i title as well. Philips Media was eager in these years to develop on both CD-i and CD-ROM, and with CD-i being stopped, many CD-ROM titles by Philips had in some way a history on CD-i. What about Gearheads?
CD-i member Arsenixa shared a nice quote about this: "There definitely was no commercial release on CD-i. However, a long time ago I found an old forum thread were someone had supposedly sold a prototype version in a lot. I managed to contact the seller who claimed it was indeed a CD-i prototype. Unfortunately, I never succeeded in contacting the buyer to confirm.
Although possible (especially considering where the seller had worked during the CD-i days), I doubt the prototype was in fact a CD-i version. The reason for this is he claimed also the prototype of Sluice in the same lot was a CD-i version. But this game has never been confirmed to exist on CD-i. However, a PC prototype of Sluice does exist and was released several years ago on Gametronik (and it didn't come from the person who bought that lot). Furthermore, PC and CD-i prototype discs from Philips look almost identical so it's easy to be mistaken
Therefore I think it's possible both Gearheads and Sluice were PC prototypes. It would be great if I'm wrong and these games turn up for CD-i but unfortunately many collectors prefer to keep these things to themselves and then there's also many people that don't even realise what they have."
