There is a second version of the CD-i scanner that was produced by 2D Denso and used with the German driving school CD-i software "Fahren" until 2009

CD-i member Adrian Zanoli shared with us a different kind of CD-i scanner than what we have seen before. Philips supported many professional applications in retail environments with CD-i technology. One of the tools was in offering product encyclopedias, to store contents labeled with bar codes. The Datalogic scanner was able to scan the bar code and the CD-i could look up the product data, including specs. Philips wanted to simplify the process for companies to keep their storage documented, instead of using more extensive and more complicated PC software. Philips advertised CD-i to be more reliable, simple and cheaper. Behind the screens I realized several systems actually ran on CD-i, like in hospitals and libraries. CD-i was much more than a games machine: It was far more competing with CD-ROM and PC as a standard, to bring all sort of IT solutions to consumers and professionals, with CD-i as a broad and safe standard. It's hard to tell how popular the professional CD-i applications actually were, but they were used up and including 2009, so after Philips dropped CD-i as a consumer platform, it stayed alive behind the screens in various professional applications.

CD-i member Adrian Zanoli owns a different type of scanner, so there are actually more official versions. Adrian: "There is no brand on the outside, except a "made in japan" on his bottom. There is a white version of this scanner with a brand on it. Inside there is a LED strip that quickly pulses, a round thing under the top part, that i think is a speaker or maybe a touch sensor and a small pcb, looks like the manufacturer is 2D Denso and use a Motorola chip. I bought it from a german retired medic, it was used in an healthcare center of some kind, so I think there is healthcare software that use it. The only title I know exist is "Fahren" that is a german CD-i used in driver schools."

[Thanks, Adrian Zanoli]
