CD-i
member TwBurn (developer Jeffrey Janssen) is quickly making progress in
developing his new CD-i homebrew game 'Nobelia'. It looks like non-cd-i
graphics, which is a good thing! I'm very interested to see what is
possible to include when enemies appear and other blocks (if that
happens), There's no slowdown right now but I suspect CD-i hardware will
be a limiting factor at some point. It looks even more sophisticated
compared to what we've seen from earlier attempts including Frog Feast
and Super Quartet. Of course, Frog Feast was a conversion, as well as
Super Quartet. Nobelia might be the first fully dedicated CD-i game,
developed for the CD-i system. Looking forward to what happens when this
is tested on real CD-i hardware.
TwBurn: "The
graphics are from an open (free) repository; it indeed is different
from most CD-i games which have a distinct style, probably because of
the possibilities that a CD-based media would have. I kinda dig the
retro (SNES-like?) style of it. So far I haven't run into any real
technical limitations. I originally planned to do another kind of game,
which was more advanced, but I settled on doing a more basic one first,
also because it's basically the first game I'm making ever. There is no
scrolling and such, which makes it a whole lot easier. I still have
quite a few spots free in my tilesheet (and some currently unused
assets).
Given that I'm
not a graphics artist, the thing limiting me the most is the
tiles/characters in the set I'm using, but that's OK, having
restrictions breeds creativity IMO. Still there's quite a bit of work to
be done. First I plan on completing the gameplay/graphics, then see if I
can get some sound working. I haven't tried implementing sound at this point. I'm confident I could get either working, but I'm definitely going to try to get both working. Also, I haven't tested it on real hardware
yet, that also might get interesting."
Many members including Jacob Davis and Omegalfa tell us the game looks like Bomberman. TwBurn about this: "Well,
I didn't know how to program a CD-i game until I started on it. It's
not exactly going to be Bomberman, mainly because of the spriteset I
chose to use is quite limited in that way, same goes for the powerups,
but I do have some ideas to make the game interesting It's been a fun
journey so far, figuring everything out, getting stuff to work. I hope
to spark some interest in others doing homebrew projects; and I'd be
happy to help! It's coded in C, I've got a build system setup on a 32bit
VM, since the compiler doesn't run on 64bit windows. I did start with
building the Super Quartet game from source, then started on this. I'm
planning on releasing both the disk image and source when it's
finished."Most currently he made some changes "under the hood" but it's starting to look like an actual game!
