The new website 'The CD-i Completionist' just finished a new review: International Tennis Open and we love the synergy of the community finding new details here. CD-i member cdifan opted for an interesting question: How does the first 1-player edition compare to the newer 2-player version? Now it seems, there's more difference between these versions rather than just implementing a two player option. The visuals are a bit different as well in the menus. Another detail is the screen above: This game was released in 1992, when there was no portable CD-i available yet, let alone any kind of digital video player. But Infogrames imagined this Philips player to show some stills of the player you were about to choose. What kind of player was this?
Dante, the reviewer of The CD-i Completionist, praises the sound of the title, something not touched upon in other reviews. Dante: "I like that the audience reaction is different depending on whether a
point is scored via a normal miss, a fault, or an ace (an unreturned
serve). The three court styles (grass, cement, and clay) are in three
different cities (London, New York, Paris) and the accent of the person
reciting the score after each volley changes depending on where you are,
and always has just the right amount of echo and reverb to sound like
it’s coming over a PA in an empty stadium." International Tennis Open was both graphically and sound-wise impressive, especially in 1992. Dante about the graphics: "The graphics are artistically strong, but the players have very few frames of animation, which can even have a gameplay impact."
[Thanks, Dante]
