Infogrames made quite a few platform games based on licensed cartoon series like Asterix and The Smurfs. Both French-based, most of these games were also developed in French by the French developer Infogrames. On CD-i Infogrames took a different approach, while on CD-i we have both a Asterix game as well as a Smurfs game, both titles were based on a boardgame instead of a platform game. Perhaps due to limited hardware possibilities, but maybe Infogrames took Philips by example and followed the family nature of the CD-i, as we have quite a lot of boardgames on it. In French it was called Les Schtroumpfs: Le Téléportaschtroumpf and it was available in 1998, according to the press. The game itself is copyrighted 1995, which again, like with many CD-i titles, is a long time between copyright and market introduction.
The animations are done quite nicely, especially as this game is a base-case CD-i title, it does not require the digital video cartridge. In the intro scene you see that Smurfette has been kidnapped again by Gargamel. In the main menu you can choose between Règles (rules), Introduction (intro), Schtroumpf (Smurf), Jouer (play), Parents (parents), Quitter (exit). Schtroumpf is the training part where you can test the minigames. Parents is also interesting as this features some kind of parental control. In this section you can choose how long your kid can play and what the pause need to be, as well as displaying the reason why he/she has to stop, like helping mom or dad, do your homework or just 'it's enough for now'. Neat little feature, in recent consoles, parental control is always built in the main menus, but with CD-i this was not the case.
While the game is pretty repetitive and the minigames are obviously based towards kids, the graphics are really good as well the boxarts. It even featured these extra covers, which is a nice little feature.
