CD-i member Matt Tyrell just discovered another Socrates CD-i player, a rebranded Goldstar GDI-1000 player, which itself is a licensed CD-i 450/80 model. This time it is accompanied with the original disc and case: 'Socrates Interactive CD Patient Education; Patient Education & Acceptance through the Power of Interactive Multimedia Technology' - It was used in a kiosk system in denstist waiting rooms. This is the CD for the Socrates branded CD-i player which includes educational material about dentistry. Dental Medical Technologies is the company behind the Socrates brand. They still make Socrates systems, although they are no longer based on CD-i systems.
The current owner, 'clblets' knows it is a rare player: "Only the third example confirmed to exist, this extremely-rare CD-i console was manufactured for use in select kiosks in dental offices. It's otherwise identical to the Goldstar GDI-1000 and Philips/Magnavox CD-i 450." The CD-i disc offers an extensive "photo album" section of before-and-after dental procedures. You check out screenshots of the CD-i Socrates program in this article we posted on Interactive Dreams 6 months back.
[Thanks, Matt Tyrell and clblets]
