Look at the similarities of this VR702 VHS player by Philips from 1990 and below the CD-i 220 player, also by Philips in 1992. It is no coincidence they look so much alike. The design of the Matchline CD-i player was based on the design of this VHS player. Philips did this more often to copy designs of its own products to create high-end products in a new product range, to prevent high costs of designing new products and to make sure Matchline products would fit in the same line-up. In this case, the VHS recorder never received as much attention as the Philips CD-i 220. Also the Philips CD-i 210 is based on existing Philips designs. Back then Philips had its own Philips Design on Consumer Electronics products.

Both the VR702 (see above) and VR703 model from 1990 were VHS players by Philips in the Matchline series. Jorg Kennis: "Note that the CD-i player CDI-220 (1992) was modeled after this VHS recorder (and its S-VHS counterpart VR813). More information about CD-i players can be found at our site: http://www.icdia.co.uk/players/"

Philips member Johan Holm shared a nice poster/advertisement of the classic VR702 player:
