Look at the similarities of this VR702 VHS player by Philips from 1990 and below the CD-i 220 player, also by Philips in 1992. It is no coincidence they look so much alike. The design of the Matchline CD-i player was based on the design of this VHS player. Philips did this more often to copy designs of its own products to
create high-end products in a new product range, to prevent high costs
of designing new products and to make sure Matchline products would fit
in the same line-up. In this case, the VHS recorder never received
as much attention as the Philips CD-i 220. Also the Philips CD-i 210 is
based on existing Philips designs. Back then Philips had its own
Philips Design on Consumer Electronics products.
