First stand-alone CD-i player for professional applications. Available with a floppy disk drive as CDI 602. The system could not be extended with a Digital Video cartridge. Is it a development kit used for authoring? Technically no, the 602 is not a development kit. The CD-i 605 was used for developing and authoring CD-i software. The 602 was a professional CD-i player mainly used in business and education areas, like schools, for trainings, presentations, etc. The floppy disc was used to transfer data between the players, like scores, answers, database entries, that sort of stuff.

CD-i member Adrian Zanoli about the rarity of these players: " it is rare, but not so much, I saw a lot of them, probably bcs a lot of companies did CD-i stuff until 10-15 years ago , most of the times sellers ask around the double of a normal CD-i player, but bcs they are huge, use a caddy, can't be expanded with an MPEG module and cant burn discs... few ppl are truly interested." Professional CD-i players are relatively rare, yes. But the 602 is, I think, the most 'common' professional cd-i player. Still, the professional cd-i players are more robust, durable, in my opinion.

[Thanks, Jessica Hall, Adrian Zanoli]
