Last Saturday CD-i member CDiArcade (Matt Demory) was streaming Mutant Rampage: Bodyslam on his Twitch channel. If the time was a little inconvenient (there were 7 viewers online) you can always watch it back here. We watched it on Sunday and enjoyed the details he told us about the game while playing. The quality of the video was high so it is a good opportunity to snap some screenshots. The game looked better than I remembered: The action was fast-paced and the enemies look very cool (and very bizarre: Tom mentions: "The mutant enemies you encounter deserve a special mention. Some of them are really, really sick. There's a large woman who hits you with her giant breasts, a guy who farts in your face, spitting cavemen, and some fellows who lose their head but still fight on.")
It surprises me that it has a lot of female enemies from russian cyborgs and topless centaurs to tigresses and geishas. They did a LOT of art for this game! This stream showed throws for more enemies. "The first enemies had a different sprite for it, I bet all of them did. If the CD-I wasn't such a pain to emulate, I'd think about diving in myself to get some shots." according to our community. They have separate throw animations - I have seen some for the lionesses in jackets and the centaurs too. Plus check the bossfight at the end of the second and the fourth level, one is a catwoman the other is a soviet cyborg lady.
Sadly while the CD-i emulators can emulate quite some games, this is one of the few that does not work with it. "I have seen an extractor program that could potentially extract the sprites, but I could not get it to work (I think it is only for Java and I have no idea how to use that CD-i Image Decoding)" - So for now, just like CDiArcade, we will need an actual CD-i player if we want to enjoy Mutant Rampage on CD-i.
The ten stages are pretty lengthy. A two-player mode would have been nice. There's not much blood, and the violence is pretty mild in general. An area where Mutant Rampage falters badly is the audio department. Every hit seems to make the same sound and there is no real soundtrack.
