Developed by 'Reunion des Musees Nationaux' (RMN) in 1995, this series of Photo CD's is a nice extension to the 'Virtual Museums' that we already have on CD-i. These Photo CD's are 100% playable on every CD-i player. The specific edition above is about Le Louvre and shows us 100 paintings that you can see here. I wonder if the resolution of these pictures now is higher compared to paintings that are shown in CD-i discs, as these are decoded as Photo CD. There is also sound commentary available on every painting, so the difference with a 'regular' CD-i is minimized: This Photo CD can be played on any base-case CD-i player, no Digital Video Cartridge is needed'. Perhaps the extra memory of the DVC helps pre-loading the thumbnails, making this disc easier to explore and enjoy.

We discovered these thanks to CD-i member DataPro, aka Walter Zeick, who we know from the community. He actually now has a full series of the 'Photo CD Portfolio'. Walter: "Before the CD-Rom for PC and Mac, the French editor Montparnasse published two photoCD disc on the Louvre ans Orsay Museum."

[Thanks, DataPro / Walter Zeick]
